COLLEGE ATHLETE ADVANTAGE faqs
How involved should parents be in the recruiting process?
Ultimately, this is the athlete’s future. He should be able to receive all of the information necessary to make the best decision for him. This means that parents should avoid over-involvement, pushing the athlete toward a decision that may not be right for him.
On the other hand, under-involvement can be an issue as well. If he has questions or seeks a second opinion, don’t turn away. Choosing a college, in general, is a major decision, and the college baseball recruiting process doesn’t necessarily make it any easier.
What are common mistakes that families make during the process?
One of the most common mistakes we notice during the college baseball recruiting process is parents spending too much on unnecessary programs. While college athletic programs can be competitive, this doesn’t mean families should spend their time and money on every program that may benefit the athlete. Instead, it’s best to work with a service such as College Athlete Advantage to determine the best programs.
The other frequent mistake parents make during the process is losing sight of the goal. It’s easy to become consumed with the recruitment process. Remember why the family banded together to undertake this journey — so the athlete can grow as an individual while playing the sport he loves.
What questions should we be asking coaches during the process?
Keep in mind that when asking questions, the athlete should take the lead. The coach is looking to get to know the potential players first and foremost and vice versa. However, that doesn’t mean parents are unable to ask questions when necessary.
Questions regarding financial information and academics are more than welcome during these meetings. While baseball is a top priority, academic success is just as important. It’s also normal for coaches to receive inquiries about scholarships and financial aid, as playing a college sport is not necessarily a cheap endeavor.
There really are no bad questions per se. Just be mindful that this is an open discussion to learn a bit more. And never approach questions as though the athlete is owed a spot in the program.
